World Pipe Band Championships 2008
Saturday 16th August 2008
Festival Summary
The inimitable skirl of the massed pipes of the world's premier pipe bands spreads from Glasgow Green across the city centre for one day in August, during this highly prestigious bagpipe event. Pipe bands from around the globe vie for the right to be seen as the best in the world at the famous 'Worlds', now a mainstay of the Glasgow summer events calendar.
Scottish drummers and highland dancers, resplendent in traditional black jacket, kilt, sporran and all the fine trimmings compete for one day, following a week of last-minute rehearsals, much of which takes place outdoors around and about Glasgow city centre. With multiple categories for entrants, based on age and ability, the event is a glorious celebration of the worldwide popularity of Celtic music, and often home Scots bands may find themselves outnumbered by contestants from as far away as the USA and Middle East.
